China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) recently released video footage showing a naval unit conducting exercises designed specifically to counter swarms of suicide drones a type of unmanned aerial threat that Taipei increasingly regards as central to its asymmetric defence strategy.The drills simulated complex battlefield conditions in which numerous low-flying unmanned attack drones attempted to penetrate protective zones around maritime assets, challenging defenders to stop them before they could reach their targets.Facing this simulated threat was the “red force,” which in PLA exercises usually represents Chinese military units. In this case, the red force relied on ship-borne missiles and onboard interception systems to defeat incoming drone waves, showcasing the PLA’s counter-drone capabilities in a contested environment.
