Traces of the herpesvirus were found in the DNA of two sets of Neanderthal remains – and now scientists want to recreate those ancient pathogen. Some experts have theorised that Neanderthals went extinct due to viruses. Now, traces of the herpesvirus which is responsible for cold sores, along with the sexually transmitted papillomavirus and the adenovirus were found in two Neanderthals’ DNA.
