On a local level in Japan, the 80% more infectious delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is circulating and projected to account for 50-80% of infections by August. The Tokyo Olympics has been postponed since March 2020, but now Japan is pushing to go ahead with the Olympics despite the global COVID pandemic raging on internationally. The delta variant is already causing surges of infection elsewhere in the world, and safety concerns regarding the virus have sparked anti-Olympics protest in Tokyo. The new variant of concern, the currently named “delta plus” variant, has also been detected in Japan and it is so far unclear what effect this will have on the infection rate at a local level. Should the Olympic games really go ahead amidst new difficult COVID variants?
