The government has begun the process of drafting its long-delayed policy on genetically modified (GM) crops, having set up an expert committee made up of agriculture and climate scientists.On 25 October 2022, the government approved the environmental release of indigenously developed GM mustard, with the aim of reducing dependence on imported mustard oil, which makes up about 60% of the country’s edible oil consumption. Along with the rest of the world, GM crops remain a controversial matter in India, a predominantly agricultural country. GM crops remain controversial for their alleged impact on human and animal health.
