India’s total software service exports stood at $205 billion in 2023–24. The US accounted for 54 per cent of these exports, followed by Europe at 31 per cent, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) annual survey on computer software and information technology-enabled services (ITES) exports.During Donald Trump’s first term, disagreements over data localisation were a key source of friction between India and the US. India resisted altering its stance on data localisation in plurilateral agreements at the WTO and tightened its regulations. For instance, in April 2018, the RBI mandated that payment system providers, such as Mastercard and Visa, store Indian residents’ payment data within India.
