Google searches for “vpn,” “virtual private network” and “browsers with vpn” surged in Florida after midnight, according to Google Trends. VPN services allow users to hide the location of their computer or mobile device, allowing them to see regionally-blocked material. As of Wednesday, Jan. 1, several major adult websites, including the world’s most popular one, have blocked the entire state from access. A new law, HB 3, which restricts children from social media and requires any site with adult content to use an age verification system or face hefty fines up to $50,000 per violation, plus attorney fees, court costs and the potential for civil liability, went into effect.
