The European Union has fined Google 890 million euros for favoring its services over competitors in search results and restricting app developers on Google Play, aiming to bolster digital market competition. These penalties, imposed under the Digital Markets Act, mark the largest against a single company, risking heightened tensions with the US just before the first anniversary of a tariff agreement between Washington and Brussels. Google has challenged the EU’s actions as unfair and potentially harmful to product quality. Despite potential US backlash, the EU remains steadfast in enforcing its regulatory framework to ensure fair competition and prevent Big Tech excesses.The fines are the biggest in total against one company under the competition law known as the Digital Markets Act (DMA), after the EU slapped penalties of 200 million and 500 million euros against Meta and Apple respectively in 2025.
