Microsoft made stock market history this week by achieving the largest single-day gain in market value ever recorded by a publicly traded company, according to a report by Bloomberg. Shares of the software giant, based in Redmond, Washington, skyrocketed 16%, marking Microsoft’s biggest percentage gain since October 2008. The surge added approximately $450 billion to the company’s total market capitalisation in just one day of trading. The nearly half-a-trillion-dollar increase in value is larger than the entire market capitalisation of roughly 96% of the companies listed on the S&P 500 index. To put it in simpler words, the value Microsoft added in one day (on July 30) alone is greater than the combined total value of the 41 smallest companies on that benchmark index – a group that includes well-known brands like Domino’s Pizza, Clorox and Hasbro. Do you think that AI will be the equaliser ?
