Satellite observations by Isro show a decline in marine productivity across parts of the tropical Pacific as an El Niño event develops, with changes in ocean-surface winds coinciding with a fall in chlorophyll-a, a key indicator of microscopic marine life.The observations were made by Isro’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) using data from the Ocean Colour Monitor-3 (OCM-3) and the scatterometer aboard EOS-06 (Oceansat-3). Scientists analysed observations from April, May and June for 2023-2026 to track changes associated with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a recurring climate pattern involving warming and cooling of the tropical Pacific.A comparison of June 2024 and June 2025, when ENSO conditions were neutral, with June 2026, when El Niño was developing, showed a notable reduction in surface chlorophyll-a across parts of the Pacific. The change coincided with a weakening and reversal of the usual equatorial winds. Instead of the prevailing easterly winds blowing from east to west, winds shifted towards westerlies, blowing from west to east.
