As AI safety and misalignment incidents continue to grow, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed to slow down the pace of AI development last week. Demis Hassabis, Co-Founder and Chair at GoogleDeepMind backed the Amodei’s proposal. Now, Google DeepMind has formally launched a new research institute that focuses on understanding how artificial general intelligence (AGI) will affect society, science and the economy. This institute will bring together researchers from Google DeepMind and outside organisations to discuss some of the biggest questions around the future and AI.
The new initiative is being led by Shane Legg as Managing Editor, with Google Senior Vice President James Manyika and DeepMind Chair Demis Hassabis also involved in its leadership.
This institute has been launched with research that covers areas including economic policy in an AGI-focused world, how AI models explain their reasoning, access to advanced AI across different parts of the world and the possible impact of AI on human wellbeing.
