Google is said to be in talks with the Department of War (previously Department of Defense) to bring its powerful Gemini AI models into the heart of the US military.The company wants to ensure its AI is not used for domestic mass surveillance (which is monitoring American citizens on a large scale) and deploying weapons that can act on their own without “appropriate human control.” Reports claimed that these two conditions were the point of contention between the Pentagon and Anthropic. Earlier this year, Anthropic refused to allow its AI (Claude) to be used for autonomous weapons or mass surveillance, following which the AI company was declared a supply chain risk – a designation rarely applied to US firms leading to a lawsuit by Anthropic claiming violation of First Amendment rights.A partnership with the US government would be a major win for Alphabet (Google’s parent company), helping it strengthen its ties to the government.
