Unidentified gunmen, with military grade weapons, carried out the attack and were reported to be speaking Spanish and English, not the French-based Haitian Creole of the island. On July 7th 2021 Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated during an attack on his residence that also left his wife critically injured. It has since been confirmed that two of the 28-strong militarily armed squad were Haitian Americans and the rest Colombian nationals, 17 of whom were later confirmed to ex-members of the National Army of Colombia by the head of Colombia’s Military. In the manhunt that followed, police killed two assailants in a shootout, the investigation remains ongoing and the motive currently remains unclear, but the assassination of Moïse comes at tumultuous time for Haiti.
