Bill Gates’ philanthropy is largely ineffective, benefits US corporate interests and is often a detriment to those he claims to be helping, while overall being carried out in the interest of benefitting the private wealth of his own foundation. The Bill Gates foundation’s failures are shocking, for example the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) tried to impose an American agribusiness model to squeeze small African farmers, and has left them poorer and people hungrier as a result. AGRA installed an effective monopoly of chemical dependent crop systems in seed laws in many African countries, locking African farmers into debt cycles to afford AGRA’s expensive seed and chemicals, which has led many to ultimately sell livestock to pay off. AGRA also incentivised cash crops over high-nutrient tradition crops, causing a drop in crop diversity, and the scheme and used intellectual property law to repress local seed trade. Something we have seen Gates advocate for in vaccine trade during the COVID pandemic to the detriment again of the world’s poor and developing nations.
