British couple accused of working for western intelligence charged with espionage in Iran

Iranian authorities have charged a British couple recently arrested in the country with espionage, accusing the pair of having links to Western intelligence services. The two are currently being held in Kerman, a city and province in Iran’s south-east, the family said in a statement that was issued by the British foreign ministry. Britain’s Foreign Office confirmed on Friday that it was “providing consular assistance to two British nationals detained in Iran” and were in contact with Iranian authorities. Several other Europeans are held in custody in Iran, which has conducted multiple prisoner exchanges with Western governments in recent years.
