China’s population woes

After decades of restricting population growth with its one-child policy, which was imposed in 1980 and gradually eased before being totally scrapped in 2016, the country is now burdened with a rapidly ageing population and spiralling health and pension costs. The government has introduced several measures to boost the country’s flagging fertility rate. Five years ago, it replaced its one-child policy for urban families with a two-child limit; in May the cap was raised to three children per couple. Is china is desperate for more babies
