On February 24th Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, declared war on Ukraine shortly before 6am Moscow time when he said he was launching a “special military operation”. He said its aim was to demilitarise Ukraine and protect Russia. In recent weeks Mr Putin has assembled up to 190,000 troops on Ukraine’s borders. Hours before the declaration of hostilities, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, had made a heartfelt plea for peace to Russian citizens. Mr Zelensky has vowed not to cede any territory.
