Cyberattacks targeting supermarket refrigerators have swept across Europe and spread to U.S. military bases on the mainland. The “refrigerator hacking” involves breaching remote control systems of large supermarkets’ refrigeration and freezing units, raising temperatures to 50 degrees Celsius, forcing mass food disposal, and disrupting supply chains. Amid speculation that the attacks could be part of Russian sabotage operations aimed at destabilizing Europe, the U.S. Department of Defense stated, “We are aware of the potential for cyberattacks.”This attack appears linked to the “freezer shutdown” incidents at U.S. military bases in August. At the time, six large supermarkets at Army, Navy, and Air Force bases in Arizona, California, Wyoming, Mississippi, and Rhode Island reported freezer malfunctions. Freezers either stopped working overnight or temperatures spiked, forcing the disposal of all contents. The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command suspects hacking and is cooperating with French authorities to trace the perpetrators. Do you think that some of the things should go back to analog ?
