Delta wave in Japan

The US and Europe are currently experiencing a steady increase in the number of COVID-19 infections in line with the winter cold and flu season, however things are quite different in Japan. Japan had a massive increase in COVID cases of near crisis proportions following the Olympics in the summer of 2021, but following this the country has seen new COVID infections plummet quite dramatically. Japan has caught up on an initially slow vaccine roll out, but this cannot fully explain this remarkable fall in cases, as neighbouring South Korea have higher vaccination rates but have not noted the same level of decline in COVID-19. The virus is similarly holding on in Spain, Portugal, Canada, and Singapore despite higher levels of vaccination. Why has the Delta wave ended in Japan?
