Navy officials in July announced its plan to acquire six Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) Abukuma-class destroyer escorts, seen as good additions to the country’s maritime assets to enhance its capability to conduct border patrol and defense. The ships are due for decommissioning in 2027 due to old age, to be replaced with newer Mogami-class frigates. The PN, however, dismissed claims that the Philippines was a dumping ground for aging warships that is why the country sent experts to conduct a Joint Visual Inspection (JVI) to determine their viability and capability for naval functions.
