Mario Draghi has reaffirmed his resignation and that of his government. A statement from the president’s palace merely said that Mr Mattarella had taken note of the prime minister’s decision. But an early election is now expected, in September or early October; Mr Draghi may stay on as caretaker till then ,however, Mario Draghi managed to retain his wry sense of humour.
