Former Justice Minister of Japan, Katsuyuki Kawai, was recently sentenced to three years in prison for his role in a vote-buying scandal involving the election of his wife Anri Kawai to the Upper House in 2019. Both Kawais were found guilty of violating the Public Offices Election Law by distributing 150 million yen to local legislators in Hiroshima in return for support for Anri Kawai run for the House of Councillors of the National Diet. Is this an isolated case of bribery in Japanese politics?
