In 2021 a declassified report indicated that US intelligence agencies believe that the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, approved the murder of the prominent dissident and Washington Post journalist. This accusations joins an earlier leaked CIA report, a UN report, and Turkish intelligence recordings from inside the embassy which all suggest the same connection to the Saudi leader. The Biden administrations recently named a new “Khashoggi policy“, aiming to impose visa sanctions on foreign government officials who engage in harassment, surveillance, and threats against journalists, activists, and dissidents; but the policy still falls short of sanctioning the Saudi crown prince.
