The US arrested Alex Saab on June 12th 2020 in Cape Verde as his jet landed to re-fuel between Iran and Venezuela, Saab was accused of numerous counts of money laundering for his part in conducting business with the Venezuelan government. Alex Saab was then extradited on October 16th 2021 from Cape Verde to the United States and faces up to 20 years in prison, Alex Saab is accused of helping the Venezuelan government run its Local Committees for Supply and Production (CLAP) food subsidy program and committing bribery and money laundering to profit from the scheme. While in Cape Verde Alex Saab complained of being subject to torture and was denied access to medical care, and the UN denounced his detention as arbitrary, and many have questioned the legality of arrest and compared it to kidnapping. Was the US right to arrest/kidnap Alex Saab?
