Kiswahili is the first African language to be feted by the UN. It is one of the official languages of the African Union (AU). July 7 is marked as the official Kiswahili celebration day. Next year, Rwanda will host the celebrations. In Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda, it’s an official language. In 2022, Uganda adopted it as an official language.
First Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda and Minister for East African Community (EAC) Affairs Rebecca Kadaga has called for the fast tracking of the amendment of the EAC Treaty to make Kiswahili the official EAC language.
During the celebrations of the second EAC World Kiswahili Day that took place at Hotel Africana in Kampala on Friday, Kadaga said the treaty should be amended to include Kiswahili as the official language in the community.
