Artificial intelligence and the data centers that drive the technology are booming with no end in sight. That’s putting mounting pressure on tech giants to come up with climate friendly ways to power all that AI computing. Tech companies are turning to nuclear fission, both from existing reactors and next-gen small modular reactors (SMRs). Microsoft signed a deal in September to restart a nuclear reactor at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island — a facility made infamous by a partial meltdown in 1979. Amazon has an agreement to buy a data center in Pennsylvania that’s plugged into the nation’s sixth largest nuclear power plant. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, however, rejected plans to increase the amount of electricity that’s feeding the data center. Do you think that 100% transition to green solutions is possible ?
