Interlock is a newer ransomware gang that uses an encryptor to target FreeBSD servers. They usually demand ransoms ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions, depending on the organization’s size. Earlier this year, a ransomware attack on a UnitedHealth Group subsidiary exposed the data of 100 million people. UnitedHealth reportedly paid two ransoms, including one amounting to $22 million, to stop the stolen data from being shared. The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and its El Paso unit (collectively, the HSCs) have announced that they suffered a cyberattack in September. The leaked information includes patient names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, government-issued identification numbers, financial account information, health insurance information, and medical information.
