Russian ships are preparing to transport military equipment from a naval base in Syria to Libya after the fall of Bashar Assad late last year. The flurry of movement comes around a month after the fall of Bashar Assad, the longtime ruler of Syria who was considered a close Russian ally. Assad’s ousting, following a rapid two-week campaign by rebel groups, was seen as a sign of the weakening of Russia’s grip on the region. Russia’s lease on the Syrian naval base, as well as its air base at Hmeimim, gave it sweeping abilities to conduct military activity across Africa and the Mediterranean.
