Tigray Crisis

Fighting broke out in the Tigray region of Northern Ethiopia in November 2020, following the Tigray People’s Liberation Front’s (TPLF) refusal to join a political coalition and their subsequent dispute of the postponement of general elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tigray Defence Forces (TDF) attacked Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) headquarters in Tigray following a build up of ENDF, as well as Eritrean and Amhara forces, on the region’s borders, and although the ENDF quickly claimed the conflict to be over fighting continued. A year later the conflict is looking more like a civil war which has spilled out into the neighbouring regions of Amhara and Afar, and the TDF have joined with the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) to fight the government forces of the Ethiopian National Defence Forces . What is driving fighting in Tigray?
