Under the current UK Conservative government there has been a massive downward trend in official responses to Freedom of Information requests, which the government legally has to respond to within 20 days according to The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000. The UK Home Office, under the leadership of Home Secretary Priti Patel, has also put forward legislation to counter state threats in recent months, which was widely condemned for being an attempt to give the government further powers to prosecute journalists and whistleblowers for disclosing “official material” without authorisation. Transparency campaigners, NGOs, journalists and even a number of members of parliament have accused this government of intentional obstruction of Britain’s usual channels of government transparency. is UK government secrecy a threat to open society and a transparent democracy?
