In 2018 Ryobi Group bus drivers in the Japanese city of Okayama staged an at-work strike, in which they continued to run a normal bus service but refused to take fares from customers. This rare form of strike action was able to bypass the usual disruption to the company’s customers and put all the pressure on to the bus company. While strike action is an important last resort to solve employment injustices and grievances they can also spread disruption and economic pressure throughout society, and in some countries workers seen as critical to society (e.g. police, firefighters, or teachers) are banned from striking.
What do you think of strikes?
